Top Movies 2007

TRANSFORMERS (12A)

Movie of the year? I think so. Sure, it's a big, brash, FX-laden blockbuster about alien robots fighting, with silly dialogue cluttering up scenes in between action set-pieces. But who cares when it's this good? Michael Bay pulled this off perfectly. Wonderful CGI makes the Transformers seem incredibly real. Stunning stuff and a film which bears countless repeated viewings - trust me.

DIE HARD 4.0 (15)

I am the first to admit I was worried at the prospect of the ever-more wrinkly Bruce Willis donning the vest again for a return as grizzled cop John McClane. But the fears of Die Hard fans everywhere were unfounded - this was a return to the form of the first film, brought bang up to date with a cyberspace threat to national security.

300 (18)

I found Sin City disappointing so approached this Frank Miller adaptation with trepidation - I need not have worried as it was one of the most thrilling films of the year. The action scenes were fantastic and Gerard Butler was on top form. The story of 300 Spartans holding off vast armies of invaders was edge-of-your-seat stuff.

HOT FUZZ (18)

The return of Shaun Of The Dead team Nick Frost, Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright to cinemas was a landmark movie event of 2007. Hot Fuzz was the perfect follow-up, a completely different genre undergoing the team's unique treatment. The cop buddy movie was transformed into a hilarious satire packed with laughs.

SICKO (12A)

Michael Moore is one of the most important voices of dissent in modern movies. This latest expose saw him turn his gaze on the scandalous US healthcare system in a dire warning of what could happen to us all. There are errors - Moore paints our NHS as a wonder of the world. Not quite - but the film is still a powerful piece.
