Exclusive Tv's Sarah Tells Of Joy At Second Pregnancy
JET-SETTING Sarah Heaney told yesterday of her baby joy after a bout of suspected food poisoning turned out to be her second pregnancy.
The TV presenter suffered nausea while on the road in Cyprus for travel show Wish You Were Here but never dreamt she might be expecting again.
Sarah, 37, said: "I was convinced at first that I'd just eaten something bad.
"Someone else in the crew was sick too, and I put it down to a spot of food poisoning.
"Thankfully, it passed. But when I got back home, I started to feel unwell again and thought something wasn't right. I did a test and discovered I was pregnant. I was delighted."
The new arrival is due in May and will be a little brother or sister for 18-month-old Eddie - Sarah's first child with jewellery designer husband Ed Adams.
Sarah admitted she is hoping for another boy.
She explained: "Well, if I have a girl this time I might be tempted to call our family complete, and deep down I don't really want to do that.
"I've always felt I'd like three kids, so having another boy this time would give me the excuse to try for a wee girl next time.
"But I'm really just splitting hairs.
I'll be delighted with whatever we get.
It's up to God and that's fine with me.
I'll just be hoping for a wee healthy bundle and I'll be happy.
"I'm really loving being a mum and Ed's the most fantastic dad. The thought of another one on the way is really exciting.
"I sometimes think to myself, 'Would I ever go back to my life as it was before marriage and kids?' And the answer is definitely, 'No.'
"I'm really happy. Having kids is just the best experience of my life. I can't wait for this one to arrive."
Sarah quit Scotland to be with Ed in London in 2006, a year after the couple tied the knot at picturesque Luss Parish Church on the banks of Loch Lomond. Avoluntary redundancy deal was on offer at STV, where Sarah was a news presenter on Scotland Today, and she decided to take the plunge.
Some speculated that turning her back on a well paid, high-profile job was a gamble.
But moving to London was a risk worth taking. After spending some time out while Eddie was small, Sarah fronted ITV's Man-Hunt with Mark Austen, which had a massive response from the public in its search for some of Britain's most wanted criminals.
But it's her latest gig, as co-host of Wish You Were Here..? Now And Then, which brings a smile as wide as the Clyde to her face.
She said: "It's the plummiest of plum jobs really, isn't it? I couldn't believe it when I landed the job."
The idea behind the show is to revisit many of the places covered by the show's original host, Judith Chalmers.
The series takes a nostalgic romp through our holidaying habits from the 70s, when the show was first aired.
It also offers viewers advice on where to holiday now, visiting destinations including New York, Amsterdam, Majorca, Dubai and Marrakech.
Sarah's co-host, Mark Durden Smith, was born to do the job - he is Judith's son.
Sarah said: "We got on great - and he looks so like his mum it's frightening!
"The filming schedule was quite tight and it was hard being away from Eddie and Ed during the trips.
"But it's a total dream job. I'm so lucky to have been able to visit all the places I have in the name of work.
"I was just blown away by Tuscany and I'd love to go back with my family. And Croatia really impressed me - it's so beautiful."
The former model is adamant she's not going to join the growing band of celebrity mums who become obsessed with shedding their baby weight the second they've given birth.
She said: "I just don't understand all that - all these people who claim to lose three stone in three weeks. It's madness.
"It's not a fair to put the pressure on yourself, and these women certainly shouldn't be held up as role models.
"I put on about two stones with Eddie, which wasn't a huge amount - I was lucky. But even then, it took me nine months to put on the weight and a lot more than nine months to get it off again.
"There was no miracle cure, either. I just ate less and went to the gym three times a week.
"My bump's growing again so I'll be facing the same thing after this one's born. But it's all worth it."
Although settled in London's trendy Battersea, Sarah wouldn't rule out a move back to Scotland as her brood grows.
She added: "I do really miss Scotland and, who knows, we might well come back some day.
"I get homesick sometimes. My sister and dad are still there, in Edinburgh, and I get up as often as I can. Whenever I'm missing the accent, I put on STV on Sky and get my fix."
Wish You Were Here..? Now And Then starts on ITV1 on Monday, January 14, and runs every weekday for five weeks.
