CALIGULA (18) *
One of the most famous - or infamous - movies ever made, this controversial film recently grabbed headlines when it was passed uncut for a release nearly 20 years after it was made. With a stellar cast including Malcolm McDowell, Helen Mirren, Peter O'Toole and John Gielgud, the film also features hardcore porn and sickening sexual violence. It's a film most movie fans will want to see simply because of its cult status but prepare for a massive disappointment that is almost impossible to sit through.
With opulent, over-the-top sets, the whole thing looks incredible but there is so much going on it's hard to take it all in.
There could have been a fantastic movie made about the depraved life of Caligula - but this mish-mash of wasted money, set design gone mad, over-acting, poor scripting and irrelevant graphic sex is not it.
MADE OF HONOUR (12) **
Tom Bailey (Patrick Dempsey) is a man about town who spends every night with a different woman and every day hanging out with his best friend Hannah (Michelle Monaghan) - the pair have been inseparable since college but nothing more than mates.
Then she heads off to Scotland for six weeks and he realises he is in love with her. Trouble is, she comes back with Colin (Kevin McKidd), her new fiance - and to add insult to injury she wants Tom to be her maid of honour. He decides the best way to sabotage the marriage is to agree, and sets out to win her over before the big day. The film is typical rom-com fare aimed squarely at the ladies who love a nice heartwarmer with a playboy seeing the error of his ways.
The Scottish-set part of the movie is borderline offensive with every cliche in the book wheeled out.
ROBOT CHICKEN SEASON 1 (15) *****
Utter genius. If you love Family Guy and American Dad, you'll lap this up. A strange variation on stop-motion animation using action figures and toys, it has episodes with the General Lee racing the Batmobile and too much strangeness to list here. Guest stars include Scarlett Johansson, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Hulk Hogan. Just buy it.
