Cups Are My No.1 Goal

SCOTT MCDONALD says being crowned the SPL's top scorer will mean nothing to him if Celtic don't have a trophy to show for his strike rate.

The Hoops hitman admits it has been a bittersweet season so far, as his personal success since signing from Motherwell is overshadowed by a trophyless campaign.

Despite grabbing a massive last-gasp win over Rangers on Wednesday to keep their title hopes alive McDonald admits pipping their arch-rivals to the league flag is still a pipe dream.

And as the Parkhead men target a flawless run-in for their remaining four games Skippy admitted his goals tally of 27 is meaningless if they don't catch Gers.

He said: "It's kind of a strange one for me. It has been a successful season in terms of how many goals I have scored.

"But I came to Celtic to win things and you want to finish the year on a high.

"There's no satisfaction in being singled out as having done well if we don't all come away with something at the end of it.

"That's still a pipe dream just now, we have to keep winning. It was a big win but to say we're back in it is an overstatement."

No-one inside Parkhead was more relieved to see Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink snatch a 2-1 injury-time winner than McDonald, after he had missed a penalty.

The headlines making him a scapegoat were quickly re-written by the same man who has landed the role all season.

The Aussie said: "I was pleased for Jan.

There will always be critics but he showed strength of character and ignored it.

"We've stuck together and it has paid off - we never believed it was over,"
