NEW boy John Sutton last night told of his joy at his debut strike - and his amazement that Motherwell didn't run out easy winners.
The former St Mirren and Wycombe striker buried a first-half header to get his Fir Park career off to a flier.
Lee Wilkie levelled for Dundee United but Well should have strolled to victory after the break and Sutton knows it.
The Englishman - who is confident of striking up a excellent partnership with Chris Porter - said: "I'm delighted to get off the mark.
That's a monkey off my back right away.
"But I'm disappointed because our performance deserved a win.
"Rarely will we dominate a side like that for 45 minutes and not get a victory but I suppose credit has to go to United who are strong defensively.
"I only trained with Chris for a day and, with David Clarkson away with Scotland, we've not had much time together. But some of our link-up play was good and we'll get better."
McGhee was happy with his new signing's contribution and isn't worried Well only have one point.
He said: "Sutton made a difference for us. He was excellent and gives us extra physical presence.
"He also freed up a lot of space for Porter. We've got a point on the board and it's a long season. We feel we're okay and deserved more against United.
"We've got ambitions to be in the top six but we don't need to be there right now.
"If we keep playing like that I'll have no complaints - I can't ask for any more."
Honest United boss Craig Levein (below) admitted his side barely merited a draw.
He said: "For the first time since I've been here I can say we probably deserved to lose.
"But Graeme Smith made two fantastic saves so we could have won. We just didn't get out the traps in the second half and Zaluska kept us in it with thepenalty save."
