Sammon hooked on Irish cap call

CONOR SAMMON hopes moving from Ireland will boost his chances of an international call up.

The towering striker swapped Derry City for Kilmarnock in the summer and believes he's moved closer to his dream of wearing his country's green jersey.

Sammon has three caps at U-21 level and also featured for the Republic U-23 select against Slovakia.

But the 21-year-old has been overlooked by selectors for more than a year. Now he hopes exposure in the SPL can propel him towards a full cap.

He said: "Don Givens picked me a few times for Ireland U-21s and is still in charge. I also scored once and as far as I know I'm still eligible to play.

"But my last cap was just over a year ago against Portugal.

"During my time in the squad I played with the likes of Darren O'Dea, Andy Keogh and Stephen Quinn.

"If I'm doing well with my club then I know I'll get the chance for Ireland. My main objective is to train hard with Kilmarnock and take it from there.

"It's difficult to get your chance with the international set-up if you are still playing in the Eircom League.

"But performing in the SPL against Celtic, Rangers, Hearts and Aberdeen can only enhance your chances.

"It shows you are capable of playing at a high level.

"It's funny to think moving away from Ireland helps you - but I regard playing in the SPL as a huge bonus and want to grab the chance with both hands."

Sammon insists the Eircom League has given him strong foundations.

He said: "The Irish league doesn't get the credit it deserves. It has come on leaps and bounds in recent years.

"I've played against some terrific players and great defenders.

"I didn't know what to expect in Scotland but while the games have been tough, I've felt comfortable.

"I'm confident in my ability and believe I can do well and give opposing defences some real headaches."
