Dream is Matt finished

MATT HENNEY became a Gretna hero when his opener against Morton six years ago put the Borderers on their way to living the dream.

And the midfielder - who now plies his trade with non-league outfit Barrow - admits he's gutted his ex-club are no more after resigning their place from the SFL.

Henney was on target after just 19 seconds on the day Gretna made their Scottish League bow back in 2002. He confessed he was shocked to hear of his old side's collapse and also expressed his hurt for former team-mate Gavin Skelton.

Matt said: "I was stunned and saddened when I heard the news about Gretna going out of business.

"It's extremely sad for the people who worked tirelessly to get the club up to where they are.

"I feel for my old pal Skelton. I was in the team with him during the side's Unibond League days when we played in front of one man and a dog.

"There will be no one hurting more than ex-boss Rowan Alexander. He signed me back when they were still a part-time set-up.

"And don't forget Brooks Mileson who invested his own cash into the club - he'll be heartbroken."

Henney reckons Gretna were playing with fire as soon as they became a full-time outfit.

He said: "I remember the club announced they were going to go full-time back in 2003.

"I wasn't comfortable about the direction they were moving in and I was proved right."
