Van Gaal set team up to play like Gers

AZ Alkmaar boss Louis van Gaal deliberately played like Rangers in last night's friendly with Zenit to help pal Dick Advocaat.

The Russian side warmed up for Wednesday's UEFA Cup Final with a 2-2 draw against van Gaal's side in Holland.

And the legendary Dutch coach set his side up like Gers after buddy Advocaat asked him for a dress rehearsal.

But van Gaal isn't a fan of Rangers' defensive approach and insists Fiorentina deserve to be in Manchester more.

He said: "It always seems to be defensive teams who are winning in football now. But I like Zenit's approach to the game - they like to attack.

"Rangers are all about defending. Dick has analysed them and so have I - that's why he asked me to play like Rangers.

"When Zenit got to 100 per cent it was so hard for us to untangle their system.

"They have so much movement throughout their team. I watched Rangers' match with Fiorentina in the semi-final and the most defensive team won.

"It's better for football if the team who likes to attack progresses. That's why I enjoy watching Zenit more."
