WALTER SMITH will rightly go down in history as a Rangers legend alongside the likes of Bill Struth. Here, MailSport looks back at the Ibrox manager's fantastic career in football.
1966: Signs with Dundee United on a part-time basis while working as an electrician and goes on to enjoy nine years at the club before moving to Dumbarton.
1977: Returns to United and Jim McLean asks him to join the coaching staff.
1978: Appointed coach of Scotland's Under-18 side and officially retires as a player two years later having made more than 250 senior appearances.
1982: Helps Scotland win the European Youth Championships and becomes Under-21 boss.
1983: As McLean's side-kick he helps Dundee United win the Premier Division title.
1986: Appointed Sir Alex Ferguson's assistant with Scotland at the World Cup in Mexico and is later invited to join Graeme Souness' revolution at Ibrox.
1991: When Souness leaves for Liverpool, Smith is named new Rangers manager by David Murray.
1997: Equals Celtic's record of nine league titles in a row before moving to Everton a year later.
2002: Despite a lack of funds to rejuvenate his squad he is sacked by the Goodison club.
2004: Returns to football at Old Trafford as Ferguson's No.2 then becomes Scotland boss.
2007: Is tempted back to Rangers after some great results with the Scots then masterminds an amazing quadruple push a year later.
