Young: I knew I'd shut up doubters

DEREK YOUNG reckons he has finally silenced the doubters during his second spell at Aberdeen.

The midfielder was a surprise signing by Jimmy Calderwood last summer following his release from Partick Thistle.

Some Dons fans were unhappy at his return because the 28-year-old, along with brother Darren, had moved away from the club to join Dunfermline back in 2003.

Many of the Pittodrie faithful claimed he had just left for a bigger pay packet.

Young revealed a few supporters showed their displeasure when he ventured into the city centre.

But he believes his performances on the pitch last season have won over most of the crowd.

Derek said: "It was a shock for some of our supporters to see me back so soon.

"But I knew I had it in me to return and play like that.

"I didn't get the warmest of welcomes from the fans but that's in the past now.

"People thought it was down to money why I left. That was part of the reason.

"However, I also didn't think Aberdeen were progressing and Jimmy was producing a good team at Dunfermline.

"When I was walking around town I could see everyone looking at me and there were one or two comments.

"Even when things were going well I have heard people saying things.

"But there have been many positives since I returned and I don't let it bother me."

Young will be geared up to face Manchester United at Pittodrie on Saturday in a tribute match to mark the 25th anniversary of Aberdeen's Cup Winners' Cup triumph.

He said: "I was in the youth team when United came here for Teddy Scott's testimonial.

"Hopefully I'll be on the park against these guys who have just won the European Cup."
