MONTROSE boss Jim Weir hailed Jamie Buchan after the defender's second-half strike sealed the Gable Endies' first win of the season.
Buchan made the breakthrough in 55 minutes, chesting down a Kevin Bradley corner to smash past keeper Andy McNulty.
Weir said: "Jamie was fantastic at the back and chipped in with his goal. We are fortunate to have a player of his calibre at this club.
"It was important to get our first victory as we were looking edgy towards the end."
Montrose's best chance of a first half they dominated came in 40 minutes when John Baird hit the post from a Steven Doris cross.
Elgin rallied after Buchan's goal and Mark Nicolson and Paul Kazcan went close with headers as they chased a late equaliser.
City gaffer Robbie Williamson said: "Their goal was a lapse of concentration when we didn't press the ball.
"There is no panic. We'll work hard in training and a couple of wins could rocket us up the table."
