MARK CANNING fired a stunning double to sink 10-man Arbroath and earn struggling Sons a welcome win.
The visitors played almost the whole game with 10 men after Jamie Bishop was red-carded for elbowing home striker Michael Moore.
Dumbarton twice had the ball in the net only to be ruled offside before Canning blasted them ahead in 37 minutes with a superb free-kick from the edge of the box.
Brian Scott equalised for the Red Lichties five minutes later when he left two defenders for dead before slotting past Derek Crawford.
Canning won it for Sons after 61 minutes when he beat Darren Hill with another sensational free-kick.
Dumbarton boss Jim Chapman said: "There's hard work ahead but this win has given our players belief."
Arbroath gaffer John McGlashan said: "What disappointed me most was losing two carbon-copy goals."
