NEW gaffer Jim Chapman's re-shuffled side failed to gel as they crashed to an embarrassing defeat.
Dumbarton had a nightmare start. Keeper David Crawford hit an attempted clearance off defender Ryan Russell and the ball fell to Craig Frizzell who rattled it into the empty net.
City made it 2-0 from a penalty.
Martin Charlesworth, bundled off the ball by Chris Gentile, sent Crawford the wrong way.
Charlesworth got his second in 44 minutes, set up by Ross O'Donoghue, who then fired home Elgin's fourth from a free-kick just after the break.
Dumbarton sub Tommy Coyne scored froma penalty in 61 minutes.
Elgin boss Robbie Williamson said: "It's a great three points as we haven't beaten Dumbarton here before. My young lads enjoyed themselves."
Chapman said: "It wasn't good enough and I apologise to the fans."
