ALLOA boss Allan Maitland slammed his side's dozy defending after they crashed to their second league defeat.
Athletic were looking to bounce back from last week's hammering by Arbroath.
But first-half strikes from Alex Williams and Brian Prunty secured a deserved win for the Honest Men.
And Maitland said: "Ayr were better all over the park and were first to every ball.
"They scored two good goals but we could have defended them better."
Ayr raced into the lead in four minutes when Williams fired low past Raymond Jellema from close range.
Skipper Chris Aitken was unlucky not to double his side's advantage moments later with a quick free-kick.
The home side almost levelled in 24 minutes but Kyle Macaulay's drive hit the side netting.
United added a second in 38 minutes when Prunty latched on to Williams' through ball and drilled into the bottom corner.
Scot Buist headed Jamie Stevenson's cross inches wide as Alloa looked to get back into it.
Chris Townsley almost reduced the deficit with 20 minutes left but his header flew wide.
Ayr boss Brian Reid said: "We played some good stuff and scored a couple of nice goals. I'm delighted."
