ALLOA boss Allan Maitland admitted his side were lucky after Brown Ferguson netted a last-gasp winner.
Ferguson fired the away side ahead only for Rangers' Blair Tolmie to level.
But Maitland breathed a sigh of relief when Ferguson kept his cool to convert a late spot-kick after Wasps defender Fraser Forrest and Rangers keeper Peter Logan picked up straight reds.
The win extends Alloa's unbeaten run to six and boosts their hopes of a play-off place.
Maitland said: "There is no getting away from it, we got lucky. But we came with a clear objective to win.
"After we scored Berwick dominated and deserved to take a point."
Alloa struck in just two minutes with Ferguson firing home a low strike from the edge of the box.
Ex-Wasps ace Brian Fairbairn then found Scott Gemmill but his finish was weak with the target in his sights.
Maitland's troops emerged from the break fired up and Kyle MacAulay almost made it two only to be robbed in the box. But Rangers weathered the storm and equalised in 54 minutes.
Stuart Callaghan's free-kick was met by Tolmie who headed past Raymond Jellema.
The away side made three changes in a bid to break down Berwick and were rewarded as they finally snatched the winner.
Keeper Logan hauled back Joe Andrews in the box and Ferguson made no mistake.
Gutted Rangers gaffer Michael Renwick said: "This typifies our season. We dominated and should have at least taken a point.
But individual errors have cost us dearly and this time Peter has to accept responsibility."
