Steven Fletcher told to prove point with U21 goals after being left out of senior squad

BILLY STARK has told disappointed Steven Fletcher to make up for being left out of Scotland's full squad by firing the Under-21s to a Euro Championship play-off spot.

The Hibs striker steps down to Stark's pool for the vital last two qualifying clashes against Slovenia on Thursday night and Denmark the following Tuesday.

Two wins for the Scots will give them an excellent chance of sealing a play-off place for next year's Euro showpiece in Sweden.

And boss Stark said: "Steven might be a bit down but he'll be able to handle it because he's a solid individual.

"He should see this as a chance to be a big fish in the Under-21 pond and show his talents to help us win the games.

"I'm delighted to have him back as he has been tremendous for us in previous matches.

"A win at home to Slovenia would put us top of the section. We beat them 4-0 last time and our finishing was top drawer. We'll try to be just as clinical in this game.

"We have got into an excellent position and don't want to waste all the hard work."

Stark's striking options are further bolstered by the fact Ross McCormack hasn't been drafted into George Burley's A squad.

The Cardiff City striker is in sparkling form for club and country and his sublime goal away to Lithuania Under-21s last week capped a convincing 3-0 win.

Stark is taking nothing for granted ahead of the Slovenia clash at the Falkirk Stadium but admits even to reach the play-offs of such a prestigious competition would herald significant progress for his young side.

He said: "Garry Kenneth, Mark Reynolds, Jamie Hamill, Steven Naismith and Fletcher were all missing against Lithuania.

"But the likes of Scott Arfield and James McArthur are now holding down places for SPL clubs and thriving. Along with McCormack they have a bit of a swagger about them.

"The Under-21 Euro Championships is a massive tournament, its profile has increased and to get there would be fantastic.

"If we win both games we might qualify for the play-offs where we'd probably play England, Italy or Germany. That would be an incredible occasion to be involved in."
