SCOTLAND No.2 Terry Butcher last night insisted Rangers warhorse Davie Weir is not past his sell by date.
The 38-year-old defender has been left out of George Burley's first two friendlies in charge after a gruelling 65-game season.
But Butcher believes Weir still has a part to play in the nation's bid to get back on the big stage in South Africa in 2010.
Tel said: "Davie's not past his best at all. He's like a nice little Bordeaux, maturing well.
"He has had a phenomenal season and I would never discount him.
"I'm not sure what his situation is at Rangers but he could still do it in the SPL.
"We'll see early where he is - if he's back at Rangers they have two qualifying rounds for the Champions League.
"Davie still has a strong desire to play for Scotland. George hasn't ruled him out at all. We have a lot of respect for him and he could still play a part."
By the time the World Cup Finals arrive veteran stopper Weir (right) will be past 40.
But Butcher believes he has the cause at heart and said: "England brought back David Beckham.
"Maybe in qualifiers you need as many experienced people as you can. I'd never rule Davie out of the World Cup completely."
