We're Rated Across The Globe

REFEREE Stuart Dougal reckons Scottish whistlers are among the best in Europe.

In the midst of fierce criticism of our officials the Grade One ref backed his colleagues and claimed they're held in high esteem by UEFA and FIFA.

He also insisted refs in other countries aren't any better.

Stuart said: "It's a myth that Scottish referees are worse than others.

"You always take what you have at home for granted - and that's the case with refs in Scottish football.

"We're strong officials. We're well coached and for years we've led the way in terms of education - at the SFA they have a refereeing academy.

"UEFA and FIFA see us as guys who aren't influenced and don't get involved in conspiracy theories."

Dougal has handled some of the most explosive games in Scottish football's recent history and is ready for another enthralling finale to the SPL season.

He's prepared for flak but insists the abuse rarely gets personal.

Stuart said: "I once got a letter from a fan who claimed I'd been biased and that he would be 'watching me'.

"That was a bit strange but I must have done OK because I haven't heard from him since.

"In terms of real badness there have been few incidents and I hope that continues to be the case."

Referees have been accused of not speaking to players enough but Dougal says some stars make that impossible.

He said: "I won't let them shout, bully or talk down to me.

"There was greater respect 20 years ago but there's more pressure now.

"A high-profile SPL player said to me this season: 'You can't talk to me like that'. That was disappointing."
