GEORGE BURLEY has warned any potential Scotland players he will not accept them using the country as a substitute if they are not good enough to get a game for England.
Sunderland's Phil Bardsley is on the national gaffer's radar but the former Rangers man has made it clear he would rather play for Fabio Capello's team.
However, if the defender isn't called up by the Italian he would consider turning out for Scotland.
That's not the attitude Burley wants and his players are also unhappy at Bardsley's stance.
Burley said: "If I believe players are good enough to push into the squad I will take it a stage further.
"I haven't done any more than that. I will watch Bardsley and assess if he warrants selection. If he does it would be a case of speaking to Phil.
"If he didn't want to play for us that would be the end of the story.
"Players have to show they want to play for Scotland, show they have passion and a hunger for Scotland.
"That is the key. I won't force any man to play for us."
Burley has also been pleased to see Birmingham striker James McFadden and Manchester United midfield star Darren Fletcher doing well at club level.
He said: "James has ability and playing every week will enhance him. Darren is also doing well and I spoke to Sir Alex Ferguson about him. He rates the player highly.
"Sir Alex told me Darren is one of the best big-game players.
"It is great to have someone with Fletcher's ability, energy and quality in the squad."
Burley will soon name his squad for the friendly against Croatia at Hampden onMarch 26.
And in-form Hibs striker Steven Fletcher is likely to be included.
