Stand-Ins Were Standouts

BEAMING Billy Stark hailed his first trip as Scotland Under-21s boss a big success and insists the late call-offs that hit his squad were a boost.

The new coach reckons the absence of six players from the trip to Portugal for the prestigious Vale Do Tejo - including key men Ross McCormack, Andrew Considine and Steven Fletcher - gave other rising stars the chance to stake a claim.

Stand-ins including Hamilton midfielder James McArthur, Celtic full-back Paul Caddis and Rangers rookie Steven Lennon all held their own against Portugal and Ukraine.

And Stark admits the new faces have given him a selection headache ahead of next month's crucial European qualifier against group leaders Finland.

Billy said: "It's a bonus to have so many options because if we have injuries for the Finland game I'll have more knowledge of boys I can call on.

"Most of the lads who didn't make it have been first-team players for us - but now I have seen what others can do so it has been more valuable to have these call-offs.

"They've all done well against top opposition and created a lot of chances." Stark was particularly pleased with the attacking style his side showed against classy Portugal.

He said: "In the past we've made it difficult for the opposition and only had one chance of our own. It's crucial we get forward and create and that was a big plus against Portugal.

"Also in the 2-2 draw against the Ukraine I thought we should have been a couple up at half-time.

"The trip has showed potential for us having confidence when we have the ball and making the right decisions in our passing."

Stark confirmed Steven Naismith will continue as the captain and said: "He is respected for his ability and also the way he conducts himself."
