MIDDLESBROUGH boss Gareth Southgate was a satisfied man despite seeing his side held by their derby rivals.
The Teessiders fought out a dull point in a frustrating clash that failed to get going.
Newcastle came close to snatching it when Obafemi Martins hit the bar with the game's only highlight.
But Southgate insists he was happy with the display.
He said: "It was very much a point gained, a hard-earned point but one we deserved.
"We defended solidly, passed the ball well and looked a threat."
