Becks: I'm in this for long haul

DAVID BECKHAM last night insisted he can play a key role in Fabio Capello's England revolution and bow out in style at the 2010 World Cup.

Becks will be 35 when the finals get under way in South Africa but the midfielder reckons he will still be at his brilliant best.

The Los Angeles Galaxy star won his 101st cap in last week's 2-0 win over the USA.

He will add to that total when he skippers the side in tonight's friendly with Trinidad & Tobago and Beckham has no intention of easing up.

Doubts were cast over his England future when he moved to the MLS last year but Beckham insists the poor quality of the American league won't hinder his chances under Capello.

And he wants to impress in what would be his fourth World Cup in 2010.

Beckham said: "People ask whether I can still play at this level but I want to continue.

"I was happy with my performance against France in March and that was my first game under Capello.

"The way I played in the match with the United States last week was also pleasing.

"I've played in three World Cups and know how much it means to the country to be there.

So I would love to still be playing in 2010 and be in South Africa."

Beckham has been in superb form in the new MLS season and looked sharp against the Americans.

The 33-year-old plans to turn on the style in the Caribbean tonight and hopes being handed the captaincy in the absence of John Terry shows he has a future under Capello.

Becks said: "It felt good setting up the opener against the USA.

"People have always talked about my set-pieces and what I can bring to the team.

"There is always a chance if I get a set-piece I'll put it in the right place."

Capello knows all about Beckham after they tasted La Liga success together at Real Madrid last season.

Beckham hopes the Italian coach can also lead England to glory.

And he believes Capello can bring out the best in England's fading "golden generation".

The ex-Manchester United star said: "It's exciting to play under Fabio again.

"I didn't win anything at Real until he arrived andwe both left with a La Liga title."
