HULL CITY boss Phil Brown reckons it was fate that striker Dean Windass, born in the Yorkshire City, scored the goal that clinched promotion to the Premier League.
The 39-year-old found the net in the 38th minute with a superb volley from the edge of the area to seal victory over Bristol City at Wembley.
Brown said: "It's marvellous - I feel sorry for their lads - but it is very fitting that Dean got the winning goal.
"I think it was written in the gods that it would be him or Nicky Barmby who would get the winner today.
"The players have played hard all season and thoroughly deserve it. It is a fantastic feeling to do it here in front of all of these supporters.
"Now comes the real challenge but there are success stories at Portsmouth and Bolton and if the chairman backs me in the Premier League who knows how far we can go?"
Goal hero Windass said: "It feels unbelievable. I don't think there is anyone left in Hull today looking at how many fans we've got here.
"To score the winner was fantastic.
We've worked hard from the start of the season and we've got our rewards for that.
"I've never been at Wembley before so scoring a goal here, especially one as important, is a great feeling. It was a terrific ball from Frazier Campbell, I couldn't believe it went in the top corner.
"I am almost lost for words - it's just a really fantastic day."
Fellow Hull-born forward Barmby added: "It is amazing to have done it with my home-town club, who have never been in the Premier League.
"It means everything for the kids in the city to see top-flight football, I'm absolutely delighted."
