Phil Mickelson misses Scottish Open to help wife Amy battle cancer

PHIL MICKELSON will not play in this year's Barclays Scottish Open while he helps his wife through her battle with cancer.

The world number two has been a regular feature at Loch Lomond and has spoken of his love for the course many times.

Mickelson is one of the biggest draws on the bonnie banks but he has put his career on hold since his wife Amy was diagnosed with breast cancer in May.

He has only played twice since then including a runners-up finish at last week's US Open.

With Amy due to begin treatment this week, Mickelson looks likely to withdraw from The Open at Turnberry as well.

The American has played every Open since 1993 but has only once challenged for the title, losing by a single stroke at Troon five years ago after a play off.

Mickelson said: "Amy is such a loving and supportive partner.

"She has always put me and our family first. Now it's time for her and her health to come first."
