COLIN MONTGOMERIE last night admitted he's starting to lack the belief to win tournaments.
He told how his age - he's 45 tomorrow - and modest form are preying on his mind after firing a 68 on day three at the BMW International in Munich.
Monty knows that score would have been better in his heyday and at seven under he's 11 strokes behind leader Martin Kaymer who shot 67 for 18 under. And the Scot - who had an eagle, five birdies, a double bogey and bogey - confessed rounds like yesterday's make him doubt whether he can still mix it with the best.
Monty said: "Five under after 11 holes would have been seven under at least at the finish in the 1990s, no question. A 68 is better but its just not good enough.
"Is it just old father time catching up? You have to begin to accept it.
I'm 45 on Monday - you can't have the necessary self-belief but I'mdoing my damndest to keep it.
"No one doubts my talent - I just have that lack of belief now."
German Kaymer, 23, is six ahead of South African Charl Schwartzel (66) while Paul Casey (67), Ross Fisher (67), Benn Barham (69) and Thomas Levet (67) are 11 under.
Scot Alastair Forsyth is way back on three under after a 71.
