PAUL LAWRIE was so angry with his dodgy driving at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth that he banished himself to the range on Friday night.
The Scot had scraped through the cut by the skin of his teeth but his hard work paid off yesterday after plotting his way around in 70 crisp shots to go one-under par for the week.
Now the former Open winner reckons his game is starting to come together after a frustrating run of results that don't reflect how well he feels he has been playing.
Lawrie said: "On Friday I had a calamity coming in the last six holes, going from four-under to doubling 13 and 17 then finishing with a bogey at the last - all because I was hitting it left off the tee.
"I've been driving the ball poorly so I had a long session on the range last night until about 7.30 and today I came out and drove the ball lovely. I played well and 70 is about the worst I could have shot.
"Most of this year I've been playing pretty well but not holing putts. Then in the last couple of weeks I was good on the greens but my driving has been poor. But today it all came together."
Fellow Scot Marc Warren was cursing a missed three-foot putt that turned his round on its head as a miserable back nine spiralled to a 75 that sees him back at two-under par.
He groaned: "I messed it up. I knew I was close to the lead when I had a three-footer to get it to five under and missed because I tried to force it.
"That killed it for me, I was sickened and my head was gone after that so I ended up finishing in an ambulance.
"I stopped trusting my swing and hit bad shots as a result."
