Mandy milks it in China scare

CHINA yesterday thanked EU trade commissioner Peter Mandelson for drinking a glass of baby milk on TV on a visit to Beijing.

Prime Minister Wen Jibao welcomed the gesture as he vowed to improve food safety after 53,000 babies were poisoned and four died from drinking tainted milk.

He said: "I was deeply moved by that. We will try to ensure all products are safe."

Melamine - which causes kidney problems - had been found in baby milk last month. It is thought to have been added to make the formula seem higher in protein.
