White House hopeful Sarah Palin faces sacking probe

ALASKA governor Sarah Palin was hit by a corruption scandal yesterday within hours of being named as Republican John McCain's choice as vice-president.

Palin, 44, was accused of firing state public safety commissioner Walt Monegan because of a clash the pair had when he was police chief in Anchorage.

Monegan, 57, says he was fired because he had resisted pressure from Palin and her family to sack police officer Michael Wooten, her former brother-in-law.

Palin has admitted members of her staff made calls on the matter to various state officials but denies it was behind Monegan's sacking.

A special counsel appointed by the state legislature is now probing whether there was any misconduct in the affair, dubbed Troopergate.
