Football commentator John Motson set to call time on international career

BBC voice of football John Motson's international career ends tonight at the Euro 2008 final in Austria.

After nine World Cups and nine European championships, he says it is time to quit.

But Motson - famed for his sheepskin coat and verbal disasters - will continue on the highlights show Match Of The Day.

Motson is notorious for his bumbling style and for using any excuse to mention England's 1966 World Cup victory.

Following a recent England goal against Germany, he said: "How ironic that the time on the clock is 66."

One great howler was: "In a sense, it's a one-man show - except that there are two men involved, Hartson and Berkovic, and a third man, the goalkeeper."

He also famously said: "The World Cup is a truly international event."

After revealing tonight's international will be his last, he said: "I don't want to go on so long people start saying I am on the wane. I wanted to go while I was still coherent."
