Two shot dead in funeral battle

AT least two people were killed after gunfire broke out during a funeral in Beirut yesterday.

Gunmen targeted the procession for a Sunni civilian killed in clashes on Friday.

In an bid to defuse tensions between the government and Shia group Hezbollah, Lebanon's army overturned two key government measures. They said the Hezbollah-allied head of security at Beirut airport could remain and the group's phone network be maintained.

A row over the two issues sparked violence which left at least 24 dead.

At least 12 gunmen died in a confrontation in north Lebanon yesterday.
