WORK on a new road could cost £1.7million more than planned after it was found to run through the home of a rare newt.
A council spokesman said: "It may only be one protected great-crested newt that is holding the workmen up."
Leicestershire County Council said the Earl Shilton bypass may open three months late so the newts can be caught and moved to a new home.
Anyone who harms a newt's habitat can end up with a £5000 fine per newt or six months in prison.
