Man killed on M8 after car plunges down embankment

A DRIVER died yesterday after his car swerved off the M8 and plunged down an embankment.

The 36-year-old man was cut free by firefighters but died at the scene, near Whitburn, West Lothian, early yesterday. The eastbound stretch of the motorway was closed for five hours while police investigated the cause of the crash.

Meanwhile, an 85-year-old woman died after she was hit by a car as she crossed a road in Newington, Edinburgh, on Friday.

In the Borders, a 27-year-old woman is fighting for her life after the car in which she was a passenger hit a tree.

And police are hunting a hit-and-run driver who fled after knocking over a 33-year-old man in Edinburgh, on Saturday.
