Baby boom could stretch police forces to breaking point

A POLICE baby boom could stretch the thin blue line to breaking point.

Top brass predict soaring maternity leave costs as almost half of Scotland's new police officers are women.

This means almost a third of Scottish police officers are now women.

Forces are adopting more family-friendly working practices to retain experienced officers after they have kids.

Chief constable Andrew Cameron, of the Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland, said: "There is a significant level of recruitment at present.

"Given the average age of recruits is 25, we can anticipate a large proportion of female officers will go on to have families.

"All Scottish forces have clear policies to support officers during pregnancy and maternity leave."
