Victims Want More Domestic Abuse Courts

CAMPAIGNERS last night called for a rise in the number of domestic abuse courts.

The demand came as the government turn the spotlight on a pilot project.

Almost 3000 victims' cases have been fast-tracked since it was launched in Glasgow's southside four years ago and two independent reviews have praised it.

The £600,000-a-year court has an 86 per cent conviction rate comparedwith 77 per cent in an ordinary court.

It also produced more guilty pleas - 81 per cent compared with 73 per cent.

Strathclyde chief constable Steve House said: "We believe the domestic abuse court in Glasgow has been successful."

Justice minister Kenny MacAskill added: "I hope the action we take following on from the report can contribute to our efforts to tackle this crime."
