Thieving Care Worker Caught After Robbing OAP

A CARE worker who stole from an OAP's purse in a nursing home was caught after bosses laid a trap.

Alexander Roy, 58, took £5 from his frail victim's purse but managers had marked the cash following a spate of thefts.

He claimed he had only "borrowed" it to buy cigarettes and was going to pay it back.

Kilmarnock Sheriff Court heard the 61-year-old victim - who had learning difficulties - liked and trusted Roy.

Roy, of Kilmarnock, admitted stealing the money at Newhouse Residential Home in Hurlford, Ayrshire, in December 2007.

He was given 120 hours community service.

Sheriff Alistair Watson said: "It doesn't matter if it's £5 or £1000 - it's still an appalling breach of trust."
