POLICE numbers have fallen by almost 600 despite a Scottish Government pledge to recruit more officers, official figures reveal.
Across the country, the number of people employed by the police fell from 23,586 to 22,991 between last March and December.
Full-time officers rose by 32 but support staff dropped by 628.
The SNP promised in their election manifesto to recruit at least 1000 more officers in Scotland over the next three years.
Labour MSP George Foulkes branded the latest figures an embarrassment but a Scottish Government spokesman insisted numbers were now up.
