A SCOTS MP sparked controversy yesterday by calling for Scottish banknotes to be ditched.
Brian Donohoe urged Chancellor Alistair Darling to scrap separate English and Scottish notes.
The Ayrshire Labour backbencher wants UK notes to mark 301 years of the Act of Union.
He said: "What better way to celebrate our country's unity? Bank of UK notes would end the confusion over the legality of Scottish tender."
Donohoe said only a minority of Scots want independence and claimed the SNP wanted to take Scotland into Europe as a separate country and accept the euro.
But the SNP said: "Brian Donohoe's suggestion is as ludicrous as the London Treasury's one that the Scottish note issue is a threat to the UK's financial stability."
