Divorce Day

Lawyers Expect Deluge Of Splits

LAWYERS are bracing themselves for D-Day tomorrow - their busiest day for divorces.

The first Monday after the Christmas and New Year break sees rowing couples storm into solicitors' offices.

Christmas debts and being cooped up with the in-laws make them finally snap. Family lawyer John Fotheringham, of Edinburgh firm Fyfe Ireland, said: "There is an increase post-Christmas in the number of people asking about divorce.

"I think it's because people who are thinking of separating tend to wait until after Christmas because they don't want to spoil it. Some people think things might get better at Christmas but often it's even worse.

"There's the weather, the Christmas bills, family pressure - any of these can be the final straw."

Around 1.8million people across the UK consider splitting from their partners over the festive season.
