Kits For Kids Scottish Gas New Strips Set To Help Lads' Team Beat Their Local Rivals
THEY have bags of talent and team spirit but the boys of Thurso Youth Club FC are lacking just one thing...decent kit.
The lads sent out an SOS (Save Our Strips) and started collecting the Sunday Mail's great Kits for Kids tokens. Now they hope they can say ta-ta to tatty tops and stop their star players nipping off to local rivals Thurso Swifts.
And the under-11s, who came second in the Caithness league, believe that new kit from the Sunday Mail will help take them to the top of the table.
TYCFC are also looking to replace the kits for their two under-nines teams - meaning they are hoping to collect a whopping 9000 tokens. With the new season starting in a month, it is a race against time to ensure they can run on to the field in new kit.
But this will not intimidate the team, who play at Thurso High, as they collected enough tokens for a new set of strips in the Kits for Kids giveaway two years ago for another of their teams.
Coach Paul Reid said: "We have a good team but we're always losing players to our arch rivals.
"They have better facilities so we struggle to attract the best players. At this level, how well teams do is a lot about pride and team spirit - playing in a new kit can help with that.
"It'll also help us to attract more new players - and hopefully get one over on the Swifts.
"It's really important for these kids to play for this club - we're very far north and it isn't like in the big cities where there's loads for them to do.
"Being up this far north we could do with the raincoats too - but then the amount of tokens starts to get pretty crazy. We'll certainly be petitioning everyone in the community to collect for us."
The Sunday Mail has joined forces with Scottish Gas to give young football teams the chance to get thousands of strips and equipment absolutely free.
