Get The Look
Talk about a room design taking wings. Each of these regal thrones would be perfect for any budding royal. And, just so you know, the 'wing' feature was originally designed in days gone by to protect the sitter from the heat of the fire.

CREDIT
Oberon striped armchair
£795 from John Lewis, www.johnlewis.com
Dressed in a bold Venetian stripe and featuring foam upholstered panels and a foam seat cushion. Pricey but solidly made. We love the design of the American mahogany finish legs, which turn out at the front to mirror the scrolled arms beautifully.
RED FLOORING
We lifted the carpet and the floorboards were in good condition. We painted them in a vibrant pop art red. The secret is good preparation - remove loose nails, sand uneven surfaces, clean thoroughly and remember several light coats make for a harder-wearing surface than one heavy coat. Check out a great range of colours from International Paints (www.international-paints.co.uk). Tile Red is fabulous.
MIXING STYLE
Think about mixing and matching styles to create your own unique vision. We created our own, connected look by placing a 1960s-style chair alongside a traditional chest of drawers. The colours go well together and bring two different periods together. Dwell in Glasgow's Princes Square have a white swivel chair with red padded seat that will fit the bill for £89 (www.dwell.co.uk).
SWEET DREAMS
A bed takes up so much space that its style will dictate the feel of the room. So think about the mood you want to create. We wanted a modern, romantic feel and opted for this voluptuous bed. It is a modern take on a traditional design which should appeal to young and old. The Pallio Bed is £359 for a double from Feather and Black stores in Glasgow and Edinburgh (www.featherandblack.com).
FLOWERS
Fortune favours the brave - that's why we papered the entire room in this impressive floral design. Not content with hanging the paper, we hand-painted selected flowers in a vibrant red to add colour. It takes a steady hand and a lot of patience but the results speak for themselves. The original black and white wallpaper is Flower Power, £25, from Graham & Brown (www.grahambrown.com).
LIGHTING
The great thing about design today is that you no longer have to choose between modern and traditional. Many retailers are fusing both for a brand new look. We love this shaded chandelier as you get all the sparkle of a traditional style with the softness and diffused light of a drum shade. The 2 Hales Pendant, £43 from Cotterell Light Centres, Glasgow and Edinburgh (www.cotterelllightcentres.co.uk) will add sparkle to your room.
FURNITURE
We reused the existing chest of drawers but gave it a lick of paint and some swanky decals - or stickers by any other name. And it couldn't have been any simpler. We took our wallpaper pattern to the local printer and had them print the design on to sticky-backed paper in red, black and white. A quick peel and stick session finished our project. Hoorah - we love it when a good plan comes together.
