Student Debt Doubled In Less Than Decade

STUDENT debt more than doubled between 1999 and 2007, a Nationalist MSP claimed yesterday.

Alex Neil said that, in 1999, average student debt upon the start of repayments was £2863.

By last year, this figure had risen to £5808, according the Student Loans Company figures.

Central Scotland MSP Neil said: "It is clear that mounting debt is a massive deterrent to education."
