Gardening Q & A

Flowers

Q I have tried growing pak choi from seed without success. This year I bought some healthy plants which are doing well but before they reach maturity they seem to be starting to 'shoot'. Can you advise?

A It sounds like they may be bolting which results in the premature flowering of the plant. Overcrowding or drought can make this happen so space the plants out and keep the roots moist.

Q I have a problem with a green, scaly weed coming up through the blocks on my driveway. How can I deal with this?

A Lichen can be killed with a moss and algae killer. Apply using a sprayer to ensure the lichen is thoroughly wet and repeat 3-4 weeks later if necessary.

Q My back garden has been taken over by that horrible weed mare's tail. How do I get rid of it?

A You need to get the weedkiller right inside the stems. Put on rubber gloves, break and bash the stems then apply a glyphosate weed killer. You may have to do this a couple of times.

Q My berberis has grown too large for its space. Can I cut it back?

AGo into the plant and prune out whole stems to reduce the height and density without robbing it of its character.

Q I would like to plant a Virginia creeper up my wall for autumn foliage colour. Does it require trellis or wires to climb up?

A It has sticky pads used to cling on to surfaces by itself so it requires no support.

Q I planted pea seeds but it looks like something is eating them before they get a chance to grow. Any ideas?

A It's probably one of two pests - perhaps both.

Pigeons love new pea shoots and slugs will devour lush new growth. Put netting over your peas to allow them to get a start and scatter slug pellets around just in case.
