Installing A New Wc (Part 1)

Diy Donny Step By Step Guide To..

Installing a new loo is not as difficult as you may think, especially if the water supply and drainage are already in place from the previous toilet.

To remove the old WC, turn off your water supply and drain the cistern by flushing it.

Undo the nut connecting the cistern to the water supply and undo the fixing screws from the back of the cistern.

Remove the cistern, emptying any water into a bucket. Remove the fixing screws that secure the base of the pan to the floor and slide it from the soil pipe, emptying any water into a bucket.

For a new suite, try Wholesale Domestic (0141 882 7774, www.wholesaledomestic.com). The showroom is well laid out and the staff are really helpful.

The most common type of WC is the close-coupled cistern, which is joined to the pan to form one unit.

Most modern cisterns no longer have a ball float and siphon flush mechanism.

Instead, they use the more compact dual flush valve, which incorporates the overflow. This is operated by a push button, which is often split into two - one for a half flush and one for a full flush.

This not only conserves water but also allows the cistern to be smaller and more compact. Here's how to fit yours.

STEP 1

Unscrew the lock nut and washer from the base of the fill valve (the water inlet pipe). Place the fill valve inside the cistern, ensuring the rubber washer is in place. Tighten the lock nut onto the underside of the cistern.

STEP 2

Insert the fixing bolts through the holes in the base of the cistern, making sure the rubber washer is on the inside, and tighten.

STEP 3

Insert the flush valve by removing the lock nut. Place it into the large hole at the bottom of the cistern, remembering to check that the rubber seal is inside the cistern.

STEP 4

Replace the locking nut back onto the threaded section of the flush valve once it is passed through the base of the cistern.

STEP 4

Place the donutshaped rubber gasket onto the flush inlet on the toilet pan.

STEP 6

Nest the cistern on to the pan, inserting the bolts through the holes. The flush mechanism's outlet must fit into the rubber gasket on the flush inlet. Fit wing nuts to the bolts.

STEP 7

Insert the push button into the hole on the cistern lid, and secure by screwing the lock nut to the treaded underside of the cistern lid.

STEP 4

Place the lid back onto the cistern. Check buttons' poles are over flush valve switch.

Top tip: Read the manufacturer's instructions as some cisterns have the flush valve fitted first.
