Save a life by learning basic CPR

Family casebook CPR

THE collapse of Leicester City footballer Clive Clarke, 27, in a match last week proves you can have a heart attack at any age. Manager Martin Allen saved his life by his quick actions in the dressing room.

But would you know what to do in a similar situation? To resuscitate someone, all you have to do is remember DR ABC.

D stands for danger. Ensure there is no potential danger to yourself or the victim.

R is for response. Shake the victim and shout: "Are you OK?" If there is no response, call for assistance.

A stands for airway. Make sure they are not choking. If something is blocking their airway, such as vomit or food, turn them on their side. Any liquid should drain but solids may have to be swept out with your finger. Then lay them on their back and lift the chin.

B stands for breathing - check they are taking in air.

C is for compressions. If they are not breathing, call 999. Start resuscitation by doing 30 chest compressions - put your hands in the middle and push down. Then mouth-to-mouth, give two breaths, followed by 30 compressions. Repeat the cycle until help comes or the victim responds.
